There is much talk about how the Public Relations industry is drastically changing from traditional media to social media. With this shift also comes the possibility of computer programs taking over online journalism. Well, I am here to tell you that humans are still desperately needed in this new technology age and I have a prime example as to why:
Recently a Christian-based website, onenewsnow.com, posted an article about Tyson Gay breaking the record for the 100 meter dash at the Olympic trials. Unfortunately, since this particular website is Christian based, it has a filter installed that automatically changes the word "gay" to "homosexual." With this filter in place, the headline announcing Tyson's running achievement read "Homosexual breaks Greene's US record in 100 at trials."
Obviously this was a drastic error for the website, but it does prove to us that people still matter in journalism. Thus our Atlanta public relations industry might be hurting due to the decreasing number of journalists, but we can be rest assured that for the time being computers are not completely taking over.
