Tax Season Help: Choosing the Right Professional to Prepare Your Taxes

April is here. That means time is running out to file your taxes. Whether you’ve put it off because you think you may owe money or because you’re not sure where to begin, April 15 will be here before you know it.

However, tax season doesn’t have to be scary. In fact, there’s one thing you can do to make the whole process simple. According to a recent article on the Equifax Finance Blog, all you need to do to make your life easy is to choose the right professional to prepare your taxes. However, you need to make sure that you use a person who is certified and knows how to prepare taxes for individuals like you.

When choosing the right tax professional, there are several things you can do to make sure the professional you’ve chosen is experienced. First, ask if that person belongs to any professional associations that require minimum continuing education hours. Why is this important? Well, did you know that there are currently 46 states that do not have any standards for licensing, training or experience for tax professionals? So, you may end up hiring someone without proper credentials to prepare your taxes. That is, of course, unless you ask.

After you’ve chosen an experienced professionals, it is also important to understand what his or her title means. If you’ve chosen a CPA, or Certified Public Accountant, you need to know that many states do not require a specific number of continuing education hours on taxes. However, many CPAs have a lot of experience preparing taxes and are the best option for business owners or those with complex tax issues.

Another title you may see when you hire someone to prepare you taxes is Enrolled Agent, or EA. This is the highest credential given by the IRS and requires an average of 24 hours of federal taxation education every year.

If you don’t own a business or have complex tax issues and are still unsure about the tax preparation process, you may qualify for free tax preparation. If you earn less than $53,000 a year, you can participate in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. Also, those 60 and older can use the Tax Counseling for the Elderly program. Both options usually employ CPAs or EAs. However, these tax professionals can only prepare tax returns and do not offer tax advice.
